For 27 years, Diane Kinton has been a much loved and familiar presence at Splendid Care and most recently, at Derwent Lodge Care Home where she is based.
As the person who supports with activities within the home, she has helped shape its warm, lively and connected atmosphere. What makes Diane so special isn’t just the number of years she has dedicated to Splendid Care, it’s the genuine care she brings to every moment she shares with residents.
Diane often says her work is “really rewarding,” and it shows. The activities she organises bring people together. There may be games, or time spent outdoors to make the most of the sunshine or even the odd friendly darts competition.
She also arranges flower arranging, baking sessions that leave the home smelling delicious and regular visits from entertainers and dancers.
The calendar doesn’t stop at the front door. Diane is always thinking about ways to bring the outside world in and the residents out into the community. She arranges trips to the local shops, seaside visits to nearby beaches and outings to garden centres where residents can browse, reminisce and enjoy a change of scenery.
She welcomes the local vicar into the home, helping to maintain important spiritual connections for those who value them. And when a birthday comes around, Diane is always at the centre of celebrations, making sure each person feels recognised and special on their day.
Among all the lively activities she coordinates, Diane also treasures the quieter moments. She knows that sometimes the most meaningful interactions aren’t planned at all. A gentle chat in the lounge, a simple game of cards, or a few minutes of companionship with someone who needs it can often make the biggest difference. These small, everyday moments – so easy to overlook – can often be the ones residents value most.
Her popular quizzes are another cherished part of life at Derwent Lodge. They draw residents together, stir memories, create friendly debate, and offer a wonderful opportunity for everyone to join in and feel part of something shared.
