Residents and people supported across Splendid Care’s three West Sussex homes were delighted to welcome a very special four-legged visitor recently, as Digby the miniature Shetland pony trotted in for a series of uplifting animal-assisted visits.
Digby, accompanied by his handlers from The Little Hoof Company, spent time at Derwent Lodge in Billingshurst, Upper Mead Care Home in Henfield, and Ullswater Cottage in Pease Pottage, meeting residents and creating memorable moments in each service. His gentle nature and calm curiosity made him an instant favourite everywhere he went.

Across the homes, Digby visited both communal lounges and individual bedrooms, offering residents and supported individuals the chance to stroke his soft coat, hold his lead rope, and enjoy the unique sensory experience of spending time with a miniature pony. In some homes, Digby even enjoyed trip in the lift, something he handled with complete ease.
At Ullswater Cottage, which supports people with acquired brain injuries and long-term neurological conditions, the visit provided meaningful stimulation and opportunities for connection. At Derwent Lodge and Upper Mead, residents enjoyed reminiscing about animals from their past and sharing stories prompted by the visit.

Antony Hall, Managing Director at Splendid Care, said: “These visits bring a wonderful sense of warmth and connection across all our services. Whether someone is living with dementia, recovering from an acquired brain injury, or simply enjoys the presence of animals, interacting with Digby offers comfort, reduces stress, and encourages engagement. It’s been heart-warming to see the smiles, conversations and positive emotional responses he has brought to each of our homes.”
Tinka Allingham, Owner of The Little Hoof Company, added: “Digby has a natural ability to bring calm and joy wherever he goes. We tailor every visit to the needs of each person we meet, ensuring the experience is gentle, uplifting and centred entirely around their comfort. It’s always a privilege to share these moments with the homes we visit.”

The Little Hoof Company’s ponies, Digby and his best friend Doug, are known for their exceptionally gentle temperament, making them ideal for therapeutic and wellbeing-focused environments. When they’re not visiting care settings and community events, they enjoy an active outdoor life, including carriage driving, enriching their routines and supporting their wellbeing.
Splendid Care looks forward to welcoming Digby and Doug back in the future, as their visits continue to make a positive impact across the Group’s homes.
